UK Office for Library and Information Networking
UKOLN
is a national focus of expertise in network information management. It provides policy,
research and awareness services to the UK library and information communities.
UKOLN is funded by Resource:
The Council for Museums, Archives & Libraries (the organisation
succeeding the Library and Information Commission), the Joint
Information Systems Committee (JISC)
of the Higher Education Funding Councils, as well as by project
funding from the JISC and the European
Union. UKOLN also receives support from the
University of Bath where it is
based.

German National Research Centre for Information Technology
GMD
is the German National Research Center for Information Technology.
It conducts research in four key areas of information technology:
system design technology, communication and cooperation systems,
intelligent multimedia systems, and scientific computing. GMD's research
and development activities are application-oriented, and the relevant
projects closely cooperate with partners from industry and science.
Legally, GMD is a non-profit, limited liability private company (GmbH).
It has a staff of 1000, plus 250 students, doctoral candidates, and
trainees. Its total annual budget is approximately DM 180 million, roughly
30% of which comes from project work and cooperation with industry.
Four of its eight research institutes are located at GMD's headquarters
in Sankt Augustin, two research institutes each are located in Darmstadt
and Berlin, and there is a liaison office in Tokyo. Its shareholders
are the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal States of Hessen,
Berlin, and North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a member of the Hermann von
Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF).
In the area of Digital Libraries, GMD is developing intelligent
interaction and presentation interfaces; advanced tools for cooperative
work; tools for exploring heterogeneous and dynamic resources; and
several types of digital libraries. Most of this research is conducted
in the DELITE group of the Integrated Publication and Information
System Institute (IPSI); in the Value-added Services group (VaS) of the
Institute for Media Communication (IMK); and in the GMD Library.
