Registry
One important focus of the SCHEMAS project is provision of a registry of metadata schemas. This registry holds links to elements and definitions of schemas, both formal standards or schemas designed for specific projects. The registry also links to metadata activity reports derived from the SCHEMAS Matadata Watch service. The registry covers metadata relating to a broad range of functional requirements, from resource discovery to rights management and digital preservation. The registry itself will serve as a good-practice example of registry use and benefits; details of its configuration will be made available as a technology baseline for other registry implementers. The SCHEMAS registry is a human readable registry and is based on the DESIRE prototype. Initial work on the SCHEMAS registry focused specifically on the schema format of the Resource Description Framework (RDF), a standard for supporting the exchange of metadata on the Web that is up for recommendation by the World-Wide Web Consortium (W3C). The RDF Schema format encodes metadata schemas with explicit Web links to related parent and child schemas -- a capability that is is particularly useful for linking translations of schemas in multiple languages. Examples of RDF/XML schema encodings of several application profiles are available. Links to various projects and initiatives: an index of links to variety of metadata initiatives and standards activities. If you would like links your schema or project added to the registry and links page, please contact us via details at the foot of this page.
