Application Profile A set of elements with associated descriptions of usage in a particular context.

BIC Book Industry Communication

BSR Basic Semantics Register. An ISO standard which identifies and defines semantic components for use in data exchange.

CIMI Computer Interchange of Museum Information.

Container A Warwick Framework container is the unit used to aggregate metadata packages.

Cross Walk A mapping from the elements of one namespace to the elements of another namespace.

Data Element / Element The realization of a semantic unit in a particular namespace.

DTD Document Type Definition

DC Dublin Core: a metadata format defined on the basis of international consensus which defines a minimal information resource description for use in a WWW environment. The term 'Dublin' is used as Dublin, Ohio is the location of OCLC's headquarters.

EAN European Article Number. A system for the identification of products, services utilities, transport units and locations. The information is represented in standard bar-codes.

EDI Electronic Data Interchange. The exchange of structured data messages to enable automated transactions between application systems.

EDIFACT EDI For Administrations, Commerce and Transport. The international EDI standard messaging syntax under the responsibility of the UN, for trading transactions in all industries. Also known as UN-EDIFACT.

Element Usage A description of the interpretation of a particular element for use in specific contexts. Unlike an element definition, an element usage definition does not introduce a new element name - it describes a local usage of an existing element.

Enumerated List Scheme A scheme which specifies a set of valid values - scheme elements. Scheme elements may be registered within the registry, or they may be indicated via a reference to an external definition.

HTTP HyperText Transfer Protocol. The protocol used for communication between Web clients and servers.

IFLA International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.

ISBD International Standard Bibliographic Description. There are seven specific ISBDs as well as the general ISBD(G): monographs -(M), serial publications -(S), cartographic material -(CM), non-book material -(NBM), printed music -(PM), antiquarian publications -(A), computer files -(CF).

MARC MAchine Readable Cataloguing. A family of formats based on ISO 2709 for the exchange of bibliographic and other related information in machine readable form. For example, USMARC and UNIMARC.

Metadata Information about a publication as opposed to the content of the publication; includes not only bibliographic description but also other relevant information such as its subject, price, conditions of use, etc.

MIME Multimedia mail enhancements to the Internet mail standard.

Namespace A scoping device used for uniquely identifying registered entities. Identically named entities in different namespaces can be distinguished. A namespace is identified via a URL including a name and version identifier.

PICS Platform for Internet Content Selection, an infrastructure for associating labels with Internet content.

Registration Authority Any organization authorized to register data elements.

Rule Set Scheme A scheme specified by a set of rules that define or describe valid values.

Schema A set of metadata elements representing the attributes of a resource. Each element will have a name and associated semantics.

Semantic Unit An informational element described independently of a specific namespace.

SGML (ISO 8879) Standard Generalised Mark-up Language. ISO standard for document description, separating contents and structure.

Sub Element An Element which refines the definition of an existing element. The sub element inherits the defiition associated with the element it refines.

URL Uniform Resource Locator. The standard way to give the address of a source of information on the WWW. It contains four different parts: the protocol type, the machine name, the directory path and the file name. For example: http://WWW2.echo.lu/libraries/en/libraries.html

Value Components Scheme A scheme which splits a value domain into multiple value components. A valid value is then made up of a tuple of valid values from the value components. Note that it is the tuple that is a valid value - not each of the values associated with value components.
