First Workshop: Combining multiple metadata standards in implementations:
User experience and requirements
University of Bath, Bath, UK
11th-12th May 2000
Introduction:
SCHEMAS provides a forum for metadata schema implementors. We will support
implementors of projects and services by providing information about the
proper use of new and emerging metadata standards and by giving guidance
on adapting multiple standards for local use in customised schemas. In
order to do this we will offer a 'Metadata Watch' covering a range of
resources targeted at implementors, and we will develop a prototype
metadata registry for disclosure of a variety of metadata schemas.
SCHEMAS is funded as an accompanying measure within the European
Commission's Information Societies Technology Programme, and our work is
particularly aimed at metadata schema designers involved in projects under
the IST Programme and in other national initiatives within Europe.
In order to explore issues concerned with managing and using metadata
schemas we will be holding four workshops over the next two years. Topics
for workshops include the disclosure of metadata by means of a
registration process, registering the diverse range of metadata schemas,
options for the structure of registries, and best practice for namespace
management.
The workshops are not confined to users of metadata for resource
discovery, we encourage participation from implementors who are using
metadata for digital preservation, rights management, e-commerce and so
forth.

Aims of the First Workshop
Projects and services that use metadata face a common challenge: how can
they make best use of existing standards to meet the specific requirements
of their applications? One often needs to use parts of one standard,
parts of another, and invent some local parts to fill in the gaps.
Standards documentation typically provides no guidance on how that
standard may be combined with others in practice.
This workshop will provide metadata implementors with an opportunity to
learn from the experience and project objectives of their peers. In order
to design more effective Web pages, training materials, and databases on
these issues, the SCHEMAS project will be particularly interested in
discussing questions such as the following:
- How do you plan to go about defining your metadata schemas? Is
your project oriented to particular standards or to
particular ways of combining standards? Where do you look
for information and guidance?
- How do you plan to publish or disclose your local metadata
schemas? Where do you look to find out how projects in your
field or discipline are defining their schemas?
- What kinds of introductory or course materials, handbooks,
user guides, or Web databases have you found useful? What
other kinds of material are needed?
- To what extent must your metadata schemas present themselves
to users in multiple languages? How have you addressed this
issue in practice?
Who should attend?
We would like to identify projects that have a particular interest in
metadata, and a requirement to implement a metadata schema, whether this
is for resource discovery, rights management, collection description, user
or service profiles etc, and whatever the element set of choice, be it
Dublin Core, IEEE LOM, GILS, indecs etc.
Participants should be familiar with the concept of metadata and have an
interest in the technologies related to management and use of metadata.
There will be some consideration of relevant technologies but the content
will be accessible to non-technicians and we hope to include participation
from those involved in standardisation process, from software developers
and from service designers.
We would like each project to nominate the most appropriate person to
attend as places are limited.
