Limitations & difficulties associated with an application server only-based approach:



• Interoperability achieved by mapping schemas to each other
• New schemas need to be mapped to ALL existing schemas within repositories
  • considerable effort, possibly duplicating past effort with a few subtle differences
  • requires a priori knowledge
  • requires expert knowledge of cooperating schemas
  • considerable index entry duplication
• Voluntary ‘best practice’ approach to vocabularies
• No parallel target support
